Ses premi\u00e8res compositions, essais d\u2019\u00e9tudiant, furent publi\u00e9es par la maison d\u2019\u00e9dition S\u00e9nart. S\u2019il choisit finalement de reprendre l\u2019activit\u00e9 paternelle plut\u00f4t que de vivre de son art, il continua \u00e0 composer suivant les conseils de ses professeurs, conservant ainsi sa libert\u00e9 et sa fraicheur d\u2019\u00e9criture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> R\u00e9tif \u00e0 toute esp\u00e8ce de mondanit\u00e9, modeste, attentif aux autres et d\u2019une grande humanit\u00e9 &#8211; se mettant au piano le soir dans son appartement parisien, il veillait \u00e0 jouer doucement pour ne pas g\u00eaner le voisinage, et d\u00e9veloppa ainsi un toucher velout\u00e9 \u2013 Journeau \u00e9tait en m\u00eame temps un musicien cultiv\u00e9. Ma\u00eetre de son art, et ouvert aux \u00e9volutions stylistiques, il jetait un regard constamment curieux sur les multiples courants musicaux de son \u00e9poque, tout en restant \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cart des chapelles.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lui pour qui \u00ab\u00a0<em>une bonne musique est une musique qui touche \u00e0 la fois le c\u0153ur et l\u2019intelligence<\/em>\u00a0\u00bb, posait sur son piano aussi bien les partitions de Bach que les <em>Sonates <\/em>de Boulez, v\u00e9n\u00e9rait Ravel, dont on sent l\u2019influence dans ses premi\u00e8res \u0153uvres, mais conservait son ind\u00e9pendance vis-\u00e0-vis des chapelles et des modes. Jugeant <em>\u00ab\u00a0tr\u00e8s important de se renouveler\u00a0\u00bb<\/em>, il \u00e9tudia les trait\u00e9s de Schoenberg et int\u00e9gra les principes du s\u00e9rialisme \u00e0 compter des ann\u00e9es 70, sans pour autant se d\u00e9partir de son langage personnel, ancr\u00e9 dans le style fran\u00e7ais du d\u00e9but du si\u00e8cle, <em>\u00ab\u00a0moderne mod\u00e9r\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb<\/em> comme il le qualifiait lui-m\u00eame. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Cette ind\u00e9pendance, aussi bien vis-\u00e0-vis de son art que du monde musical, se traduisit aussi par un penchant marqu\u00e9 pour les formes libres \u2013impromptus, pr\u00e9ludes, caprices- o\u00f9 son imagination put s\u2019exprimer sans entrave formelle, et dans la raret\u00e9 des indications interpr\u00e9tatives port\u00e9es sur ces partitions, laissant aux interpr\u00e8tes une grande souplesse d\u2019approche. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Son \u0153uvre est marqu\u00e9e par les lieux o\u00f9 il v\u00e9cut, de Biarritz \u00e0 San Sebastian en passant par Nice o\u00f9, tout jeune mari\u00e9, il partit diriger l\u2019H\u00f4tel Windsor de 1926 \u00e0 1936. L\u00e0, il collabora \u00e0 plusieurs reprises avec le violoniste Gil Graven, la majeure partie des \u0153uvres de cette \u00e9poque \u00e9tant d\u00e9di\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019instrument. Ses compositions d\u2019avant-guerre sont empreintes de cette clart\u00e9 solaire et des paysages maritimes qui constitu\u00e8rent une source d\u2019inspiration privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e (<em>Nuits Basques, Aux Rivages M\u00e9diterran\u00e9ens, Marine<\/em>). Mais son \u0153uvre traduit \u00e9galement son attachement \u00e0 sa famille et au monde de l\u2019enfance <em>(Pi\u00e8ces enfantines, Sc\u00e8nes \u00e0 jouer aux enfants, Suite pour les Jeunes, \u2026). \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u00c0 compter de 1936, Maurice Journeau s\u2019installa d\u00e9finitivement \u00e0 Paris o\u00f9 il poursuivit son \u0153uvre discr\u00e8te, se consacrant principalement au piano et \u00e0 la musique de chambre, avant de s\u2019orienter vers la musique sacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la fin de sa vie. Estimant <em>\u00ab\u00a0avoir suffisamment \u00e9crit\u00a0\u00bb, <\/em>il cessa brusquement de composer en 1984, laissant en tout plus d\u2019une centaine d\u2019\u0153uvres, dont la plupart encore in\u00e9dites et le sentiment que ce compositeur attachant n\u2019a peut-\u00eatre pas re\u00e7u l\u2019accueil que sa musique m\u00e9rite.  <br><br> Patrice Mercier <br><br><em>Nota\u00a0: les citations et anecdotes sont tir\u00e9es d\u2019une conf\u00e9rence donn\u00e9e le 18 novembre 2018 par Chantal Virlet-Journeau, fille du compositeur, dans le cadre du Festival Piano au Mus\u00e9e W\u00fcrth \u00e0 Erstein. <\/em><br> Pour prolonger l&rsquo;\u00e9coute :  Hormis Skarbo, qui a consacr\u00e9 deux albums majeurs \u00e0 sa musique de chambre (Ensemble Opus 41) et \u00e0 sa musique pour piano (T. Betz-J. Micault), aucun label ne s\u2019est r\u00e9ellement int\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre de Maurice Journeau. L\u2019enregistrement du quatuor op.11 (Quatuor de Chartres\/REM) est quasi introuvable, tout comme celui de la <em>sonate op.6<\/em> (C. Cousin\/F. Go\u00efc). Reste la <em>Fantaisie<\/em> dans une anthologie de musique fran\u00e7aise pour violon et orgue (A. Robert\/J. Boucher\/XXI) et l\u2019album <em>Canticum Novum<\/em> (B. Leblanc\/J. Boucher\/SMD) qui ne pr\u00e9sente, parmi diverses m\u00e9lodies sacr\u00e9es, que sa Pri\u00e8re <em>\u00e0 la Vierge<\/em>.
